Proposed World's Largest Shipyard and Ship-Building Construction Project Following the release of the first tranche of £4,965,000,000.00 loan granted by the British Petro, the construction will begin on what is being considered as the world's largest shipyard, with operations expected to commence within 4 years. The shipyard will cover fifteen kilometres of coast along Shanghai's Changxign Island, and will be fully operational by 2019 with annual capacity of twenty million tons. Two existing shipyards in Shanghai, the Jiangnan and the Hudong, will be relocated to the new yard. This £5 billion project aims to make China global leading shipbuilding nation by transforming its state-run China State Shipbuilding Corp (CSSC) into the world's largest shipbuilder. Wuhan Shipbuilding Co. Ltd. will be capable of building high-tech liquefied natural gas carriers, super tankers and luxury liners. It will also help boost relevant industries such as steel and engine manufacturing, and create job opportunities for more than 200,000 people.
