China's chain stores continued to enjoy rising sales in the first quarter of the year, with total sales up 26.9 per cent over the same period last year, according to a report by the State Administration of Internal Trade. The total retail sales volume of chain stores nationwide hit 5.98 billion yuan (US$700 million). China now has 1,441 chain stores, 313 more than in the first quarter of last year, according to the report. The number of supermarkets surged by 55.8 per cent, with the number of large warehouse stores growing by 33.3 per cent. Supermarket retail sales grew by 34.4 per cent, while figures for large warehouse stores are up 15.7 per cent.
